This idea was spawned from the MTV video music awards. In case you didnt hear, Eminem was basically more of an asshole than I could ever hope to become. So this got me thinking: how is he sucessful? He isnt particularly talented, hes rather amusing. But hes amusing for the reaction he draws out of people. Let me explain.
He can come out on an album and bash gays. He knows that buy doing that, 2 things are going to happen.
1) The gays will come back and protest/dissaprove of him
2) It will all be widly publisised
In this case, Eminem has the press around his finger. All he really needs to do is insult someone big, or someone with enough weight to fight back, and hes got instant publicity. But its not the publicity that makes him famous, its the media. They paint him as a bad boy, just like he wants, and the kids eat it up. They go buy his album just to see what the fuss is all about.
But broading the scope, anyone with money can use the press. Look at senaters, the president even. When campaigning they use the press more than anyone. They buy TV time, they run ads that say how good they are, and how bad their opponant is, most of them twisting the truth. And this is the news media sending us this, the people who are suppost to be impartial. Hell newspapers endorse candidates.
People wishing to make public their accoplishments can simply get it on TV and BOOM, everyone knows it. Wow he gave $1,000,000 to a local charity, wow he ran around the world.
Yes, the press are easily swayed by money, but what about when they arn't paid, what do they report on then? Simple, whatever will get them the most awards. The press love "TEAM COVERAGE!" because it means they dont have to do any real work. Simply interview a few people, and every 5 minutes recap something. Wow they found a body! lets interview 10 people, and with recaps, we can stretch it out an hour! then later we can say how much coverage we gave you! What? Who cares about the rest of the country!
Then there are those heartwarming stories of an idiot and his dog that he rescued from a house fire that he set... or stories about hiking through the woods... this isnt news, ITS FILLER!
I think the news papers itself is the best summery of news. about 30% of it is real news, and the other 70% is ads, classifieds, or crap you really dont care about.
