It's nifty, but I really don't see the point since it's so much quicker to just run MSN messenger in the background.

I use it with Opera. It works as well as anything from Sourceforge.
MSN Messenger = devil.

I just glanced over it but the install directions makes it sound like it was designed for linux, what about us windows users :p

Nope, the instructions are for windows. We linux people have something else. ;)

You're missing the point, Keith. As I see it, the main advantages are:
- Accessing mail from your Hotmail account in a decent mail reader
- Downloading it from the server so you can read it offline
- Integrating it into your email storage system along with mail from your other accounts
Microsoft recognised this, which is why they put this functionality into their Outlook products. This is giving people more choice in mail clients, as it's one less feature exclusive to MS products, which are frequently shown to be insecure and are generally either under-featured (Outlook Express) or overpriced (Office Outlook).
Mind you, I get Office Outlook free through wotk at the moment... but I prefer Thunderbird's simplicity and feature set for my personal email.
All Messenger gives you is mail notification. That's worth jack-all if you're on dialup, and it's not worth much for any broadband user with an email account other than Hotmail.
Besides which, I've banned Messenger from my PC... as should any right-thinking PC user. :p
@ NL: :p
Blame Sun and WORA (Write Once, Run Anywhere) for this... ;)
I prefer this type of app (stores its settings itself), as it's not registry-dependant and makes it sooo easy to backup / copy a working installation...

Oh ok it was the java archive extension that confused me, usually programs with that extension are made for non-window OS's

Like I said, you can thank / blame Sun for that.
It does make it easier to distribute...

Poor aussies and their dialup speeds! :p
And you can use (windows) messenger with *lots* of different email clients. A quick glance at my contact list shows people with email domains like @telus.net, @att.net, @shaw.ca, etc.
